Karl Kussmaul is Professor Emeritus, University of Stuttgart; 1976 Director Staatliche Materialpruefungsanstalt (MPA) (State Materials Testing Institute); and a Full Professor (Chair of Materials Testing, Materials Science and Structural Science). 1974 member of the German Reactor Safety Commission (RSK), International Representative of Federal Republic of Germany as contact expert in matters of reactor safety with foreign governments. Author of 350 papers. 1981 co-editor, 1987 Principal Editor of the international journal Nuclear Engineering and Design (NED), 2000 Consulting Editor. Organizer of the international “MPA Seminars”, co-founder of the Japanese-German and French-German Seminars. Awards: 1986 “Officers Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany”, 1988 honorary professorship, Nanjing Institute of Chemical Technology, 1989 honorary doctorate, Graz Technical University, 1997 “Medal of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg.”
